The home page http://www.osiris-sps.org is made with Osiris, powered by some VPS node and displayed by another software of the suite, Isis, a web-gateway read-only.
It's the best example of a complex portal.

Any PC that run Osiris will be a node of the portal. Think about people sharing Torrent or eMule file, it's the same, but with Osiris the portal content are shared. In fact, Osiris also implement DHT for discovering nodes. So if a large percentage of the servers are shut down, the application (and its data should be able to survive and replicate).
A bit complex to explain here. Conceptually, Osiris portals are maded by objects (that can child of others objects). Every object have an author (with RSA keys for autenticity). For that it seems the structure underlying osiris is promising. But what else should the platform offer? It's not just a forum, right?
We have "components" that render a tree of objects in a layout, for example a component "Forum" that render Forum->Topic->Posts or components "Docs" that render Section->Text-Comments.
We have "modules" that act as box that can be injected in the layout in different areas.
We have an Extension System (with an Addons/repository inside the software, for auto-update).
People can write extension to implement components or module. Python is the scripting language of Osiris.
Potentially any kind of extension can be made.
Would there be trading? Escrow? Price matching of bids and offers? Or just a list of them and people must arrange each transaction with each other?
In other words, what level of complexity do you have in mind: bitcoin-otc, localbitcoins, MtGox?
Currently it's hosted on our SVN server. We are totally focused on the 1.0 release, after that we can think about migrating from SVN to GIT.
@Clodo, do you have any idea of the timeline for the release of the open source version? Would you put it on github for more people to inspect and contribute (obviously security couldn't be trusted until then, and even so it would need quite a bit of time to learn the code)
A timeline... i hope in this year. We are rebuilding the core engine for the 1.0 release, we are in delay, and we don't have founds, so we develop it in our spare-time.
I'm looking your async server.
Bye!

A preamble: This project it's currently in a 'stand-by' state.
We release the latest, beta 0.X, closed-source version at November 19, 2011.
We apologies if you have issue with the Mac version, the OSX edition are young and used by few people here.
We have promises to release the next 1.0 version as open-source, under GPL, but for a lack of time
and resources our developers team (2 people) have a delay following the roadmap.
This is also the reason for why in this support forum your idea don't have a rapid feedback.
I still hope that someone can join with us in this discussion.
Now, about your idea:
The current production version can be used to a project like that.
If i understand, you need at least typical forum feature.
A forum like that must be viewed by people that install Osiris (like an Hidden TOR services),
but it's possible to open a public gateway with another software in the same suite, called Isis.
To understand, our homepage: http://www.osiris-sps.org/ it's entirely an Osiris portal showed by an Isis installation on a public domain.
If you want, me or other people here can create an Osiris portal for this project, to start experiment.
From your side, please give us some feedback about your OSX issue, or use the Win or Linux edition.
Bye!
